Hitmen firing on all cylinders
A perfect week has Hitmen on top of EJHL
Wayne, NJ - This past week the Hitmen hit the ice with one common goal, six EJHL points. With a rear mid week game versus Apple Core and a two game weekend set against the Valley Jr Warriors the Hitmen were hungry to regain the EJHL top spot.
On Wednesday the Hitmen would renew their cross town rivalry with their southern division foe, Apple Core. From the drop of the puck the Hitmen were primed and ready as just :38 seconds into the game newcomer Alex Cantor, fresh off a 6 week stint on the injured reserve, scored his first of the season, and the Hitmen did not look back. Behind multi-goal games from Ryan Craig, Will Frederick, Jimmy Day and Jeremy Langlois the Hitmen would cruise to victory, 11-1. In the victory the Hitmen clicked for 4 powerplay goals raising their league leading powerplay percentage to 43%. After the game we caught up with head coach Toby Harris and he elaborated on the victory and the team's blazing special teams play.
"I was very impressed how the boys came prepared to play tonight. It is always tough when you break from routine and add a game in the middle of the week, but it did not seem to affect the boys. I was especially impressed with our puck movement again on the powerplay, and our aggressiveness on the PK, special teams are something that the team prides themselves on, and I think it shows. Now that we have gotten past another tough EJHL team, we need to start to focus on the weekend and the Valley Warriors."
When Saturday came, it did not look as if the focus was a problem as once again the Hitmen hit double digits at home beating the Valley Jr Warriors, 10-2, in front of the Wayne faithful. The Hitmen scoring would be lead by a Herculean effort from #25, Nick Geraci. Geraci would score back to back goals in the third sandwiched by three assists, one being on the game winning goal, good for 1st star of the game. The Hitmen would also get multipoint nights from eight other Hitmen in the victory.
On Sunday, the Hitmen would suit up for game two with the Warriors and the scene would be much the same as behind first period goals from Ryan Craig, Alex Cantor and Jeremy Langlois, the Hitmen would build a 3-0 lead and not look back. In the 7-2 victory the Hitmen once again got scoring from every line as rookie, Bill Lemen, notched his first as a Hitman and Jon Morrow continued to build on his strong season shelving his 10th victory good for first in the EJHL. After the game we spoke with coach Harris on the weekend.
"Anytime you put 131 shots on net in a two game series you need to be more than happy with the effort, but there is more to the game than offense. This weekend I was happy to see all four lines contributing in every sense, our defense played well, and Jon made some nice saves. I couldn't have asked for more on the weekend."
With a 12-2-2 record the Hitmen currently sit on top of the EJHL with a huge weekend series against the second place Bay State Breakers. The games will be televised by Fast Hockey beginning Saturday night at 5:45pm. Please visit www.jerseyhitmen.net for all the details.
