Hitmen take 3 from Kings, extend streak to 21
Wayne, NJ - This past weekend the Hitmen squared off with the southern division leading, South Shore Kings, at the Capital One Bank Ice Vault. The Hitmen, trailing the Kings by seven points with two games in hand, were looking to extend their 2010 point streak, draw closer to the division leaders and they did just that gaining three huge points on the weekend.
On Saturday night the Hitmen hit the ice running scoring three goals in the first 9 minutes of play as Justin Agosta, Danny Bahntge and Mike DiMare would chase South Shore goaltender, Brad Barone, from the net. The Kings however would not die scoring once on the powerplay before the end of the first to draw closer, 3-1. The second stanza would start quite differently than the first as coach Scott Harlow would adjust his lines and in the first shift it would pay off as :39 seconds in Sean Logue would score to cut the Hitmen lead to 3-2 but the Hitmen would not fade. At the 17:33 mark, Hitmen defenseman and EJHL all-star, Jason Binkley, would notch his 10th goal of the season to put the Hitmen back up by two heading into the third period.
Deja vu! Off the drop of the puck, only:58 seconds into the third period, on the first shift, the Kings would strike to cut the Hitmen lead again to 4-3. As the period progressed the Kings started to turn up the heat but Hitmen goaltender Matt Morris was equal to the task, until the 19:27 mark. With the Kings goal empty and an extra attacker, Shane Walsh, would bang home a rebound on the door step to tie the game at four.
"Tonight was very disappointing," commented coach Harris. "Anytime you have a great team like South Shore on the ropes, you need to finish them off, and we did not do that tonight. The beauty of hockey though is we get another shot at them tomorrow, and hopefully we learn from this tie...."
Sunday, the Hitmen did learn from their mistakes as once again the Hitmen jumped out to a 1-0 compliments of the red hot, Mike DiMare. South Shore would battle back nine minutes later, but the Hitmen would take control from there rattling off 4 unanswered goals, skating to a 5-1 victory and cutting the South Shore lead on the Hitmen to a measly four points with the Hitmen having three games to play.
After the win we caught up with Hitmen GM and head coach, Toby Harris. "I thought this was a total team victory today. Steve Racine played very well in net, I thought we got great shifts from our leaders and got some big goals from guys that we in a bit of a slump. I could not have asked for a better team effort, especially off of yesterday disappointing loss." Harris went on to say, "with three games remaining we have our own destiny in our hands and that is a great feeling. Our job is simple, we win out, we win the southern division. I know that these guys are hungry, I know that these guys can taste it, I am excited to get back at it Wednesday at Philly."
